Grandpa Potts (Chitty, chitty, bang, bang) said, ‘Never say no to adventures, always say yes otherwise you will lead very dull lives.’

At Kirkbride Primary School, we take this quote very seriously! Our school motto is, Explore, Learn, Grow and our curriculum is about adventure; adventure in the everyday and adventure in the big wide world.

This year we are working as a team to make a pledge to our pupils; a bucket list of adventures you can look forward to if you move through our whole school.

We promise that a child starting with us in nursery now and staying with us until Year 6 will have the opportunity to...

  • Complete a number of Wainwright Walks
  • Camp out in school
  • Stargaze
  • Stay in a bothy or mountain house (Skiddaw House)
  • Visit and explore a Capital City
  • Visit the theatre
  • Learn to ride a bike
  • Design, prepare and cook a meal
  • Visit a museum
  • Learn to swim
  • Compete in competitions
  • Sing as part of the biggest school aged children’s choir in a stadium/arena
  • Learn to play a musical instrument
  • Grow and cook vegetables
  • Learn basic first aid
  • Learn sign language (Makaton)
  • Care for animals

We are very excited as our list grows and will be producing a Kirkbride Promises Passport for children to complete each year as these experiences build up.

On 10th November 2023, we launched our Early Years & KS1 Kirkbride Promises Passport with a Wainwright Walk up Binsey Fell, near Keswick. All of the children completed this fell, with stunning views over the Solway Coast adn Bassenthwaite Lake.

On 3rd November 2023, we launched our Kirkbride Promises Passport with a Wainwright Walk up Latrigg Fell, near Keswick. All of our KS2 children completed this fell, with stunning views over Derwent water and Keswick.

In September 2024, Nursery, Reception and Year one and two all went on a walking adventure to Hallin fell near Ullswater. It was a fabulous day with many of our parents and carers  supporting our school, and we were rewarded with a chocolate coin and spectacular views from the top of the fell, watching the boats and the airplanes! We are so proud of all the little legs and their perseverance and determination to complete another Wainwright. Great job everyone!

In September 2024, KS2 completed another Wainwright and climbed Dodd Wood near Skiddaw in the Northern fells. What a brilliant walk, with enormous determination and perseverance shown by all. It's a steep one, but that didn't deter our explorers from reaching the summit and seeing the amazing views over the valley.
